Howard and Karen Baldwin will team with David E. Kelley to produce a feature film based on the origins of the World Hockey Association and hockey great Gordie Howe.
The movie will focus on the 1973-74 season when a 44-year old Howe returned toprofessional hockey after a two year retirement and played on the same team as his sons, Mark and Marty, for the Houston Aerosin the upstart World Hockey Association. The Howes led the to the championship with Gordie being named league MVP. Gordie Howe's wife Colleen served as agent/manager to her husband and two sons.
Gordie Howe will serve as an executive producer on the film along with Mike Ilitch Jr., whose family owns the Detroit Red Wings for whom Howe played the majority of his hockey career.
The announcement coincided with Monday night's Red Wings-Los Angeles Kings game and the 60th anniversary of Howe's first NHL goal.
Howard Baldwin owned and operated the Hartford Whalers for 17 years and was owner during Gordie Howe's final three pro hockey seasons with the Whalers. Kelley's father, Jack Kelley, served as general manager and coach of the Whalers. professional hockey after a two year retirement and played on the same team as his sons, Mark and Marty, for the Houston Aerosin the upstart World Hockey Association.
