The high school swimming careers of Mehmet Dinc and Jeff Meadows came to an end Wednesday afternoon, but they didn't walk away empty-handed.
Dinc and Meadows were among three Mississauga students who won medals on the final day of the Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations swim meet at the Etobicoke Olympium.
"I gave it everything I had, I'll tell you, but I'm not very satisfied," said Dinc, who captured a silver medal in the senior men's 100-metre individual medley race with a time of 1:03.02. "I really wanted to come in under 1:02."
The Clarkson senior was just nipped at the finish line by Ricky Davids of Georgetown, who won the event by a margin of .05 seconds. Had he come in with his desired time, Dinc would have broken the OFSAA record by half a second.
Meadows captured a bronze medal in the senior men's 100-metre backstroke with a time of 1:06.06.
"I'm pretty happy with that," said Meadows, a student at Erindale. "We've only had a swim team for the last couple of years. I was hoping for a little more, but I beat my best time by nearly two seconds."
Drew Gray of Mentor College was sixth in the race with a time of 1:08.83.
The only other medal winner from Mississauga on the final day of the meet was Lorraine Whiting of Erindale. She took the silver medal in the senior women's 100-metre individual medley with a time of 1:13.10, finishing nearly three seconds behind the winning time.
"I really wasn't expecting to win a medal," said Whiting. "I've been away from school competition for over a year and I haven't been training as much as I used to. I've got to get my endurance up again."
Other than those three medallists, it was slim pickings for Mississauga schools.
The Lorne Park Spartans team of Melanie Dragan, Cheryl Jackson, Tara Gothreau and Chloe O'Neill finished fourth in the junior women's 200-metre freestyle race, missing out on a chance at the podium by .12 seconds.
Moments later, Dragan had to settle for seventh place in the junior women's 100-metre individual medley with a time of 1:19.25. Gothreau was fifth in the junior women's 50-metre freestyle consolation final and O'Neill took seventh place.
Kai Tai Li of Glenforest was third in the consolation final of the junior men's 100-metre individual medley and then took fourth place in the consolation final of the junior men's 50-metre freestyle.
Brandon Loshusan of Assumption took fifth spot in the junior men's 100-metre open individual medley, four seconds behind James Lee's record-setting time of 100.74. Lee, from Riverdale, broke the old mark of 1:02.58 set last year.
Jennifer Nuttall of Port Credit finished first in the consolation final of the senior women's 100-metre individual medley and that placed her 11th overall in that bracket. Trish Petrosoniak of Clarkson was seventh in the senior women's 50-metre freestyle.
St. Aloysius Gonzaga finished second in the consolation of the 200-metre relay freestyle relay and Glenforest was 33rd out of 43 teams entered in the women's 400-metre open freestyle relay.
