Blockbuster filmmaker Chris Nolan has confirmed that he will helm the planned sequel to the hit superhero film 'Batman Begins'.

The anticipated film has been in the production pipeline since the success of 'Batman Begins', which starred Christian Bale in the lead role as the caped crusader.

In addition to confirming that he will return for the sequel, which will be titled 'The Dark Knight', Nolan also announced that the film will feature Batman's arch-enemy The Joker, a role which will be played by Australian star Heath Ledger.

According to Empire, the script for the sequel is being penned by Nolan's brother Jonathan, who is working alongside 'Batman Begins' scribe David Goyer.

Speaking of the confirmation, Nolan said, "I'm excited to continue the story we started with 'Batman Begins'.

"Our challenge in casting The Joker was to find an actor who is not just extraordinarily talented but fearless. Watching Heath Ledger's interpretation of this iconic character taking on Christian Bale's Batman is going to be incredible."

Shooting is expected to begin early next year with producers eyeing a 2007 release date.
